മാർക്കസ് ഒറീലിയസിനെപ്പറ്റി കേട്ടിട്ടുണ്ടോ? ഇല്ലെങ്കിലും സാരമില്ല. പക്ഷെ, സ്റ്റോയ്‌സിസം എന്ന ഹെലിനിസ്റ്റിക് ഫിലോസോഫിയെപ്പറ്റി കേട്ടവർ തീർച്ചയായും അതിനോടൊപ്പം ഈ പേര് കേട്ട് കാണും. മാർക്കസ് ഒറീലിയസ് റോമാസാമ്രാജ്യം ഭരിച്ച ഒരു ചക്രവർത്തിയായിരുന്നു. മഹാനായ അലക്സാണ്ടർ കാലയവനികയിൽ മറഞ്ഞതിന് ഒരുപാട് വർഷങ്ങൾക്ക് ശേഷമാണ് ഒറീലിയസിന്റെ ഭരണ കാലഘട്ടം.(എ.ഡി രണ്ടാം ശതകം). ഏതോ ഒരു ചരിത്രകാരന്റെ അഭിപ്രായത്തിൽ അദ്ദേഹം “ലാസ്റ്റ് ഓഫ് ദി ഫൈവ് ഗുഡ് റോമൻ എമ്പരെർസ്” ആണ്.
